As the fall season unfolds, we photographers eagerly anticipate the opportunity to capture the mesmerizing beauty of autumn foliage. Whether you’re just starting out with your smartphone or you’re a seasoned pro with top-tier gear, there’s something for everyone. I put together just a handful of tips I hope you will find useful.
For those of us who are venturing into photography with a smartphone, start by unleashing the potential of your device. Try out the High Dynamic Range (HDR) mode for capturing the richness of fall landscapes. Additionally, make use of user-friendly photo editing apps such as Snapseed or Adobe Lightroom for quick enhancements. When shooting, keep an eye out for the magical “golden hour” – the soft, warm light that bathes the surroundings during early mornings and late afternoons. It’s called this because the light appears more and more yellow right after dawn and right before dusk. As for composition, remember the rule of thirds for well-balanced photos, and experiment with the panorama mode for those sweeping vistas.
For those of us using a DSLR or mirrorless camera, such as the Canon EOS 90D or Nikon Z50, here’s a few tips. To make those fall colors pop, invest in a Circular Polarizer (CPL) filter from trusted brands like B+W, Hoya, or Tiffen. The CPL filter will reduce unwanted reflections and enhance color saturation. Now is also the time to explore your camera’s manual mode, adjusting settings like aperture (f/5.6 to f/11) and shutter speed for artistic shots. For capturing intricate details, like the veins on leaves or dewdrops, you might want to consider a dedicated macro lens, such as the Sigma 105mm Macro or the Canon EF 100mm Macro.
Lastly, for all of us seeking the pinnacle of image quality, we should consider upgrading to a full-frame camera like the Nikon D850 or the Sony A7R IV. Take your skills to the next level by experimenting with long exposure techniques for those enchanting waterfall or river shots amidst the fall foliage. Don’t forget a sturdy tripod and ND (Neutral Density) filters, with trusted brands including Lee Filters and Breakthrough Photography. To achieve maximum depth of field and detail, embrace focus stacking by combining multiple images at varying focus points. For artistic bokeh effects, employ prime lenses with wide apertures (e.g., f/1.4 or f/1.8) like the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 or the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art (a great line of lenses all around).
Maybe you are taking the dog for a walk, or driving home from work, be sure to have your camera with you to capture some truly amazing colors. Happy shooting!
